m-Health has recently exploded because patients, nurses, and doctors are actively using mobile apps in their daily lives to simplify and accomplish tasks while they are on-the-go. Expectations have changed and there is an app for just about every health care clinical and administrative function (Larkin, 2011).

mHealth (mobile health care) is gaining momentum in Canada

With the rapid spread of wireless technology and the internet across the globe, mobile healthcare is gaining more and more interest from a consumer perspective. In the developed world, IT specialists, medical device makers and smart phone-carrying physicians and patients area all being introduced to the advantage and convenience of m-Health (mobile health care).

ABI Research estimates that there will be 15 million medical devices by 2012 – including innovations from smart pill bottle caps, through to electronic medical record (EMR) sharing in real time.

App called 'Bant' helps kids monitor their blood glucose levels

Approximately 80% of Canada’s health-care dollars go to the treatment of chronic illnesses. Health care professionals are turning to smartphone technology to help patients monitor chronic illnesses—saving lives with devices that most of us only use to send text messages and play with apps.

The Bant app is a constant reminder to young diabetics that they can keep their condition from worsening if they modify their behaviour.

SickKids Hospital and their 'Pain Squad Mobile App'

The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto needed to find a way to encourage their young cancer patients to complete daily reports on their pain. With a little back-up from Canada's top police dramas, their innovative mobile app made this overwhelming task easy and fun.

To further encourage the kids to fill in their reports, they built in a graduation structure.
